Average Weather
May through October finds perfect outdoor weather in this Ohio vacation destination. During the five-month span, average mean temperatures are in the 50s and 60s. It gets horribly hot here. August, the hottest month, averages highs of 80. December, January and February are frequently below freezing with January’s average lows in the middle teens. June is the wettest month with almost four inches of rain.
Transportation
Sandusky is midway between Cleveland and Toledo. If you are flying into either airport you’ll do well to arrange a rental car --- they both have outlets of most major chains. The only way to enjoy the great mix of natural beauty and amusement park attraction the area offers is to have access to a personal vehicle. Public transportation does not work for a Sandusky vacation. To reach Sandusky take the Ohio Turnpike (I-80) to Exit 118(7) and follow the signs north on U.S. 250, or take Exit 110(6A) and follow Route 4 north. Amtrak and Greyhound also serve Sandusky.
In-Season Costs
You will definitely want to budget $59 for a pass to Cedar Point and Soak City. If you enjoy betting on horse races you’ll need to budget for Cedar Downs --Ohio's first off-track gaming and entertainment establishment where you can bet on live horse races from tracks all around the USA. You can bet on outcomes from Churchill Downs, Gulf Stream, Santa Anita, Saratoga, the Meadowlands, and many more. In-season expect to pay from $80 up to $150 for a nice room for two adults. Meals run a range including most national chains from budget options to expensive gourmet choices. If you are in Sandusky during the off-season to visit family or conduct business prices are significantly lower.
Day Trips
Only a fifteen-minute drive from Sandusky sits the Midwest’s only drive through safari park. From Memorial Day through Labor Day, the African Safari Park in Port Clinton, Ohio makes a great day out. Exotic animals abound. The 100-acre park is just 17 miles west of Sandusky via Route 6 west to Route 2 west, exit St. Route 53 N Catawba Island exit. Everything from alpacas to zebras lives at the park that is home to over fifty species. In addition to the drive-through area there is a walk through area where more domesticated animals wait to welcome you. The park is open daily from 9 AM to 7 PM throughout the summer. Admission for adults is $15.95
