Indianapolis At a Glance

Best Time to Go
In May and August motor sports take over Indianapolis with the running of the Indianapolis 500 and the Brickyard 400. The city is also devoted to its NBA team, the Indiana Pacers, while the Colts and the Indians also have their stalwart fans. In this sports-minded city, the best time to visit might be whenever your favorite sport is in season and playing at home.

Average Weather
November through March, the average temperature is 33 F. The average summer temperature is around 70 F, with July having peak average highs of 75 F. Annually, Indianapolis gets around 40 inches of rain that’s evenly distributed throughout the year --- there’s no "dry season." Expect snow about seven times each winter, with at least an inch of the white stuff each snowfall.

Transportation
A range of carriers serves Indianapolis International Airport. Taxis and vans are the best option for getting into the city. You can reach Indianapolis Yellow Cab at (317) 247-6233. For information on Metro Bus in Indianapolis, call (317) 635-3344.

In-Season Costs
In addition to sports travel, Indianapolis is a manufacturing and industrial Mecca; numerous large companies have a presences here. Expense account travel may be a factor in making Indianapolis a surprisingly expensive place to visit. A hotel with a good business location can easily cost $100 nightly. While there is a range of restaurants in the city, you’ll search far and wide for a dinner at a cost of less than $20 unless you restrict yourself to a burger and fries.

Day Trips
Northern Indiana’s Amish Country is a popular day trip from the Indianapolis area. You can call the Elkhart County Visitors Bureau at 1-800-262-8161 for information about it.

Saint-Mary-of-the-Woods, the mother house of an order of Roman Catholic sisters, has several annual events suitable for family outings; you can call them at (812) 535-3131 for information about tours, pilgrimages, and special events.
