Average Weather
In January, the average low temperature is 17 degrees Fahrenheit with 30 degrees being the average high. July averages range from 62 to 82. Detroit has more winter precipitation than other cities, with an annual average of 34 inches of snow and 28 inches of rain.
Transportation
From Detroit Metropolitan Airport to the city, Commuter Express, (888) 854-6700, offers frequent service to various locations. Detroit isn’t named Motor City for nothing --- public transport is limited and infrequent; if you fly into town it's best to rent a car via one of the many national chains with area outlets. Also, the metro area is not particularly pedestrian-friendly. You really need wheels.
In-Season Costs
Hotel rooms can be surprisingly expensive in Detroit due to a rapid growth in business travel. Try to book well in advance to avoid prices of upwards of $100 for a moderate business classroom. Meals are more mainstream in price: Expect to pay around $20 for a nice dinner without wine and budget around $7-$10 for lunch money.
Day Trips
Bald Mountain Recreation Area, with 11 lakes and two trout streams, is within easy reach of Detroit. This fisherman’s paradise is in Lake Orion, Michigan. Just across the border in Windsor, Ontario, you can take true advantage of the American dollar by hitting Casino Windsor for a night of gambling and entertainment. Reach them at (800) 991-7777.
